What you who have disabilities can do

Being disabled among many non-disabled can be demanding and experienced difficult. But with a little effort and own resources situation can often be less challenging.

Public and quality assured
The biggest obstacles encountered is that others are unsure of how to relate to your disability. They may be afraid to do something wrong, or they think simply that something can be perceived as an obstacle. The main source others have compared to your inclusion is you! You are the expert on your situation.

Speak up!
For people with disabilities, such as need practical assistance for activities, or who can not participate on an equal basis with others because of a hidden disability (such as asthma or heart failure), it can be tiring and uncomfortable having to explain this to others. Many have also experienced not to be believed or taken seriously, and this makes it enough nothing easier next time they have to notify. But although it can be difficult, many feel the honesty and openness pays. It is easier to gain acceptance from others if you are clear on their own limitations and what activities they need assistance. It will make it easier for others to help. And if you do not say anything, so one can not expect people to understand. Remember that you can afford to refuse people who want to help you to do it, if you do not give clear message.

To send a written letter / mail can also be an option if you find it difficult to talk face to face about your disability. When you formulate your writing, you can also get more time to explain what you want to get there, and you can for example list itemizes what you need help, or what should be done if, for example, would suddenly become bad. If medication is part of your everyday life, a written description also be a useful supplement to an oral instruction.

... Or let others tell to you
If you find it difficult to talk about your illness or disability, it might be a good idea to let someone else do it for you. This may be one of your parents, or maybe a relative or an assistant. If you are concerned that things should be said correctly, you may want to discuss this carefully with the person you have chosen. It may also be useful to consider whether you want to be present or not, whether you want to give message to all or only to one, and in what setting you think it's best that this is being recorded.

Always have a dose of self-irony in stock
Even Irony is important! It is always better to laugh at themselves if something does not go as it should, than to be ashamed. If you find that you have "fool of yourself" in one way or another, you can be pretty sure that those around you are going to forget this long before you forget yourself. To not take itself too seriously can be a useful tool for the success of accepting yourself and your own limitations.

Your personal identity is not your bodily limitations. Everyone wants to be seen as the man he is. Focus on your possibilities, not limitations!

Show understanding that others are unsafe
All are unsafe when they encounter situations they are not used. Uncertainty among others in relation to your disability or illness stems often in fear of offending you. "Is it okay to offer assistance? Is not it okay to offer assistance?" Many may feel afraid to trample others on their toes when they do not know how the others will react.
